Some amazing talent – young and old – was on show at the Northern Preview on Saturday 6 May.
Revolution Show Corps’s Junior Band opened the event and, despite a tenor stand malfunction, the percussionists wowed the audience with their cadences and played along with the brass instructors’ rendition of Prince Ali from Aladin. The junior guard then impressed with their performance to a tune from Disney’s Tangled.
Anchormen Percussion the took the stage, featuring five boys performing drum cadences on tenor and bass drum. Fantastic cross-over sections from the tenors and great rhythms from the basses – the future’s looking bright for percussion in the north!
The very entertaining Vulcan Show Corps (formerly Doncaster Danum) then performed an engaging programme of popular songs, with the junior trumpets and cornets brilliantly performing three songs on their own. It was great to see some saxes in the mix, and the trombonist really made the difference in Abide With Me.
After the break, the Halifax Elland Stedfast Association Band impressed with their traditional drum and bugle tunes – the Magnificent Seven was particularly entertaining.
Concord Allstars then took to the stage to perform their space-based 2017 programme, including music from 2001 A Space Oddessey, Star Trek, Star Wars and ET the Extraterrestrial. Again it was great to see young people getting the chance to perform.
Finally, Revolution Show Corps performed their 2017 show Jeckyll and Hyde with some impressive performances from all sections, and a great solo performance from the trumpet and mellophone players. They demonstrated some great musicality which bodes well for season in BYBA and DCUK and we wish them
well representing the north of England at DCE.
Overall the event was well supported and showcased youth talent at its best. Thanks to everyone involved in organising it, and especially to the refreshment team for keeping us all fed and watered. A great event all round.
