Join the BYBA Judging Panel

What opportunities are there to become a BYBA Judge?
There are opportunities throughout the year for interested people to join the Judging Panel, in the areas of Wind, Percussion, Drill & Deportment, Musical & Visual Effect, and Colour Guard. It is possible for Panel members to undertake adjudication in more than one of the Captions.

What requirements do I need to join the BYBA Judging Panel?
A thorough knowledge of Wind, Percussion or Visual disciplines, as the result of appropriate qualifications or through past involvement with a competing unit, or perhaps having a current interest or participation in the music/visual arts.
As with most activities, the major requisite is to have and show enthusiasm, with the ability to pass on the knowledge and experience you have gained, and the willingness to learn.

What kind of commitment is required?
  • A willingness to take part in various forms of training, whether it be attending scheduled training events, getting together with more experienced Judges or individually developing your own judging skills through home study, reference manuals and video tapes.
  • Being available for a limited number of judging allocations during the BYBA Contesting season (The majority of contest dates are on a Sunday.
  • The desire to advance your adjudication skills by continued self-development.

What will I get out of being part of the BYBA Judging Panel?
While travelling expenses are reimbursed for any BYBA Contest you adjudicate at, there are no financial benefits. You will, however, be part of a national activity that seeks to encourage the development of the Musical and Visual arts amongst young people. If you're a former marching member, then becoming a BYBA Judge will enable you to put something positive back into the activity in which you previously had the opportunity to participate.
